Education is a key pillar of the Wings of Survival initiative. Our efforts focus on stimulating curiosity and care, by bringing young people on the expedition through virtual classrooms and on-the-ground engagement, in each of the 15 countries en route. Weekly 30-minute live streams – hosted by our partner Exploring by the Seat of your Pants – will be freely available to students from across the flyway for the duration of the 9-month expedition. Complementary educational materials created by our partners Manomet and the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network will be made available to teachers. Communities en route will be invited to follow our journey and to reach out for in-person opportunities, including school visits, bird watching, and physical activities. We also envision the use of virtual reality tools for building community around the Wings of Survival story. Specifically, we are keen to explore the possibility of using glasses that virtually project our expedition reality to the homes of fellow cycling enthusiasts. That way, people around the world could ride select stretches of the journey with us on their indoor trainers.
