Bird Migration

The Hudsonian whimbrel (Numenius hudsonicus) can be found across the entire Pacific Americas Flyway, from its breeding grounds in the High Arctic to the non-breeding range along the Pacific coastline of Latin America. The extensive distribution of this long-distance migrant aligns perfectly with the core concept of the Wings of Survival story: a daring feat of endurance, shared by birds and humans. Much remains unknown about the migration dynamics of the Hudsonian whimbrel, including the locations of critical refueling stop-over sites. To contribute to bird migration research and set the scene for the expedition story, we will fit a dozen whimbrels with Argos GPS and Motus transmitters. The bird tagging will happen on Chiloé Island in Chilean Patagonia during the non-breeding season, in collaboration with and Prof. Juan Navedo at Universidad Austral de Chile and Prof. Chris Guglielmo at Western University, Canada. The data will be co-hosted by the Global Flyway Network.
