Bird Migration

The Hudsonian whimbrel (Numenius hudsonicus) can be found across the entire Pacific Americas Flyway, from its breeding grounds in the High Arctic to the non-breeding range along the Pacific coastline of Latin America. Much remains unknown about the migration dynamics of these whimbrels, including the locations of critical refueling stop-over sites, which constraints conservation of this at-risk species. In January 2026, we traveled to Chiloé Island in Chilean Patagonia, where many whimbrels spend the non-breeding season. In partnership with Prof. Juan Navedo (Austral Shorebird Alliance, Prof. Chris Guglielmo (Centre for Animals on the Move at Western University), and their research teams, we successfully equipped five adult whimbrels with Argos GPS trackers, sponsored by Lotek Wireless. This research promises to advance our understanding of whimbrel migrations. Importantly, the tagging of whimbrels set the scene for the first Race with Nature. If all goes well, these five whimbrels will be on the starting line in Alaska in July where we begin our expedition across the Americas, in hopes of reuniting with ‘our’ birds along the journey and ultimately in Patagonia.
